Default rabbit dandruff and loss of fur

    hi,

a few month ago i brought my male rabbit to live indoors as he wasnt taking care of himself and his bum was getting really dirty. a few days ago the fur on his back has just started to fall out and now he has massive bald patches on his back. i brushed him this morning as i thort it could be moulting but he has no hair on his back now. it isnt mites as i have checked but what else could it be. the skin is a bit red and there is alot of dandruff but everywhere else is fine e.g. ears etc just his back.

could it be the central heating? a couple a weeks back my dog got diagnosed with an oedema (fluid in her lungs) and has been sneezing alot over past few days but the vet cannot find a cause could these 2 be related.

i dont want him bald could he be stressed because i dont let him in the garden anymore, which i cant because he just stays sat in mud and it sticks to his fur. or could it be the heating???

any help what so ever would be great thanks

It does sound like some kind of skin reaction to something - what does he sleep on? might be washing powder or seomthing maybe? especially if he's red, i doubt its the heat, altho could be... hope he gets better soon.

Default IT WAS MITES!!!!! I AM SHOCKED

took him to the vets IT WAS MITES!!!!! the vet said it was likely from his hay, i even got the medicated one from sainsburys yet according to the vet it will be where he has got them. i feel awful, he keeps scratching but the vet gave him a shot and i go back in a week for another. he just said to remove all the hay. cant believe it infestation of mites because of sainsburys im so annoyed my poor bunny thanks for ppl who replied tho, anybody had mites too that cn give me info on them, ive read tht you need to remove everything but the vet said to have his shots and remove hay and he will be fine. tho i have pretty much thrown everything away now but any tips, he must be feeling horrible and itchy

I think your bunny has mites or lice. So take him to a vet. Hope you bunny gets better!

I was going to say mites.... then I read this

Years ago one of my bunnies had this, and that is why I thought it was mites with yours.

I had to remove everything and clean thoroughly then spray with a mite spray from the vets

    Good luck xxx

Poor little man my Poppy had mites a couple of months ago and we got rid of it just by using the stuff we got from the vets and disinfecting her WHOLE living area completely. Even things that you don't think need to be disinfected- clean everything he comes in contact with to stop him from re-contaminating. Also if you have another bunny, cat, dog, or other pet make sure you give them their parasite treatment as they could be infecting him or they could get it.

Rest in peace Rosie; you'll always be my special girl xx

Even I own a Bunnie for 2 years but I didn't come across this sort of problem with my rabbits. May be in your case they are suffering from some sort of allergies or skin problem. Try to keep them away from chemicals and lotions. The best option is to bring them to the vets. They may give the better solutions than the layman.
