    Default Is this possible?

I am just learning all about the genetics side of breeding. Is it possible to get an Orange from a Blue Self Doe x Sooty Fawn Buck ? I ask as I have been offered an Orange that has come from this pairing but I am unsure if this is correct. The only other info I have been given is that the Mother of the Blue Self Doe was a Chocolate Self.

    Hi there,

It may be worth directing your query to a specific breeder site. We do have a few breeders on here but most of us are pro-rescue, due to the thousands of bunnies already in rescue waiting for new homes.

Have you owned bunnies before, or are you buying specifically to breed?

OK....I have spent some time trying to work this out. Here is what I think the Genotype of each rabbit is:

Father: Sooty Fawn as he has been described to me is Aa Bb C_ Dd ee

Mother: Blue Self as she has been described to me is aa Bb C_ dd Ee

This will give the Orange that I have been offered as Aa Bb C_ Dd ee

If anyone can confirm this I would appreciate it.

hiya no its not possible as both sooty fawn and blue are self rabbits (aa) so cannot pass on the required 'A' gene to make an agouti patterned rabbit... so if the parents colours are correct then the baby cannot be an orange... i would suspect it has a solid belly not white and is actually a choc tort.... or they're mistaken on the father

Thanks for the reply Becki. Here is a link to a picture of the Father that is said to be a Sooty Fawn. See what you think.

I'm not familiar with the term sooty fawn but i take it as another name for tort? The male you showed is a black tort, and his genotype would be aaBbC_Ddee
You described him with the capital A, referring to agouti which he is not. So orange is impossible since both parents are self. Orange is a torted agouti, described as A_ee

If you were to cross him with the female, aa Bb C_ dd Ee
    You would get these possibilities
    - black aaB_D_Ee
    - blue aaB_dd_Ee
    - chocolate aabbD_Ee
    - lilac aabbddEe
    - black tort aaB_D_ee
    - blue tort aaB_ddddee
    - chocolate tort aabbD_ee
    - lilac tort aabbddee

It's also possible to get different shaded color if they were to carry a shaded gene on the C-locus, for example, like chinchilla, pointed, frosted pearl, albino etc.

    yep he's a sooty fawn

Disney... a sooty fawn is the name given to the colour on lop (and lionheads and a few other breeds) in this country... we dont have a standard for a 'black tort' so although they are genetically the same get different names in different countries

hey we even have different names for the same colour on different breeds

That is a black tort. You would probably come up with blue and black tort babies.
